Lock 49, a Grade II listed structure, is the first of five at Barrowford that lift the Leeds and Liverpool round the Barrowford Reservoir that supplies the canal. The road bridge that now spans the canal at this point replaced the old narrow bridge from which the photo was taken. Just behind that the M65 also crosses the canal here.
