View of the Regent's Canal, just north of Kings Cross, looking east towards the west portal of the 960 yards long Islington Tunnel, from a Route 17 bus to Archway crossing Caledonian Road bridge, on 31st July 2021. The canal celebrated its bi-centenary in 2020, having opened in 1820 to link the Grand Junction Canal at Paddington with the Thames at Limehouse. In the mid-19th Century, there was a proposal to drain it and convert it into a railway but this never happened. In 1929, both the Grand Junction and Regent's were amalgamated to form the Grand Union Canal but this section is still known colloquially by its original name.
