Displaying an almost ecclesiastical form, the surviving building from the first Felling station was opened by the Brandling Junction Railway in 1842 and closed in 1896 when the line was quadrupled by the North Eastern Railway and a new station constructed nearby. The farthest two tracks are operated by Network Rail whilst the tracks visible in the foreground serve the Tyne and Wear Metro station on the old NER site around 150 metres to the left.
