A Northern Rail service from Middlesborough to Hexham passes the Metro stabling sidings at Pelaw on 2 December 2022. Whilst an ongoing project to double sections of track between Pelaw and South Shields warranted closure of the Metro line, trains were terminated at Pelaw and used the sidings as a convenient turnback facility. The junction signal beyond the rear of the train controls Pelaw Junction where freight access to Prax oil terminal is in use to the left but the opencast disposal point accessed from the erstwhile Leamside line to the right is now closed. Beyond the junction Network Rail and the Metro share joint running on the lines through to Sunderland.
