The sweeping walkway leads to the integrated bus station below the level of the railway. The main station building was constructed in 1925 to drawings by SJ's then Head Architect Folke Zettervall.
The station was bought by the local authority property company in 2017 from the state-owned railway property company, Jernhusen, in order to develop this public transport hub.
Sundsvall is the capital of Västernorrland (Western Norrland) county yet strangely lies on the east coast of Sweden. The explanation is that Öster (Eastern) Norrland county lay in the Grand Duchy of Finland when it was part of the Swedish Kingdom.
