Barton Swing Aqueduct

Another wonder of the UK canal system, the Barton Swing Aqueduct, which replaced an earlier masonry aqueduct and opened in 1894 to allow barges on the Bridgwater Canal to cross the newly constructed Manchester Ship Canal. The aqueduct is unique in the world as it remains full of water when open to allow ships to pass. This view taken from the adjacent Barton Swing Bridge, a ten minute walk from the Trafford Centre tram terminus.
