Lowton St Marys was a station on the GCR line to Wigan, and the junction for the branch to St Helens Central through Ashton-in-Makerfield. The branch closed to passengers in 1952 and Wigan Central trains finished in 1964 when the station closed. Freight for Ashton in Makerfield, and Haydock race specials, continued until 1968 when the Haydock Junction link opened on the WCML and the line through Lowton closed. This view looks north from the filled in overbridge to the site of the junction, now public land. The railway ran along the line of the retaining wall. Behind the camera, Lowton St Marys station site is now occupied by a timber merchant's.
