Kirkton of Auchterhouse Level Crossing
This was the level crossing of the original course of the Dundee and Newtyle Railway with the road to Kirkton of Auchterhouse showing the former trackbed stretching away to Pitpointie Farm and Balbeuchley Top. The photograph was taken in 1998 looking east along the former single track line. The posts (since removed) were said to be original level crossing gate posts, the last remaining. If correct that's very impressive for a line opened in 1831 and closed in 1860. Behind the camera the route west to Auchterhouse had been largely ploughed out and a deep cutting partly filled in.
