The summer service of two ferries take road traffic across to Gräsö, a distance of 1km, in five minutes. These are powered ferries rather than the cable-hauled boats found elsewhere in Sweden. The ferries are part of the road network and in this case there is no charge for using them. Öregrund (pronounced uh-ray-grund) Harbour has changed a lot since the days when its main business was exporting iron in the 18th Century; now it sees mainly fishing boats and pleasure craft. The early British steel industry relied on exports of the so-called Oreground iron from this port. The ore was mined at Dannemora (see image 70243) and forged at numerous charcoal-fired forges (Vallonbruk) established by knowledgeable people from Wallonia (now part of Belgium) across the area north of Uppsala (Norduppland).
