Mersey Rail's class 507 & 508 EMUs, built by British Rail Engineering ltd at their York Carriage Works, are in the twilight period of their 40+ years operational existence, being replaced by the new Stadler built class 777 EMU/BEMUs. In this 14 July 2023 view L-R can be seen units 508127 & 508124 stabled by the south side of Southport Station, whilst 508125 is stabled between workings. At the beginning of August 508127, together with 507005, started its final journey to Sims Metals at Newport for scrapping, but put up a fight by refusing to re-couple to the hauling loco after run round at Shrewsbury station. They were both left by the prison platform for a few weeks, not reaching Sims' site until 29 August. Addendum The other two units in the view, 508124 & 508125, were hauled away together for scrapping a few weeks later; being delivered to Sims Metals at Newport on 9 October
