Crook of Devon

The land south of Crook Mill, in Crook of Devon, was called Lam(b)laires and it was here that the station opened in 1863. In 1662, on roughly the site of the station, particularly gruesome events took place following witch trials. Many were accused in the area. Those found guilty were taken 'to the place called the Lamlaires bewest the Cruick Miln' to be 'stranglit to the death by the hand of the hangman, and thereafter their bodies to be burnt to ashes'. This memorial is just to the south of the former station site. It memorialises Agnes Brugh, Janet Brugh, Christian Garvie, Bessie Henderson, Margaret Lister, Agnes Murie, Bessie Neil, Janet Paton (senior), Janet Paton (junior), Isabel Rutherford and Robert Wilson. OS maps show a cross marker just north of the former goods yard.
