There are only three main passenger lines on the NZ rail network and all are operated primarily to allow tourist traffic to soak up the magnifcent scenery rather than an effective means of transport; that role is provided by domestic airlines. On the South Island the 'Coastal Pacific' provides a daily return service from the main city of Christchurch to the port of Picton in the north and the connection with the Inter-island ferry to Wellington. At the intermediate station of Kaikoura the relieving train crew is obviously being well looked-after by one of the onboard staff. The 3'6'' gauge locomotive is one of the DXC class built by General Electric in the USA in 1976.
