West Drayton

Surviving Victorian buildings at the west end of the obsolete westbound fast tracks platform at West Drayton, on New Year's Day, 2024. The wide space between the tracks is a result of the abandonment of Brunel's former broad gauge in the 1890s. While the Uxbridge branch from here, closed in 1962, is abandoned, that to Staines West, closed in 1965 despite new halts opening at Poyle Estate in 1954 and Colnbrook Estate in 1961, still sees freight trains as far as the aviation fuel terminal for Heathrow and aggregates depots at Colnbrook. Back in 1978, I was on a railtour that went all the way to Staines West but, south of Colnbrook, the line was abandoned on 16th January 1981.
