Thornton-in-Craven

Just to the east of Thornton-in-Craven station a short mineral branch ran north to a large quarry operated by P W Spencer. This supplied railway ballast but closed sometime between the two world wars. Despite the length of time that has elapsed the closed line is surprisingly intact. A stone bridge carries the trackbed over Old Road and then a tunnel leads into the quarry itself. The quarry is now partly flooded, and overflows through the tunnel trackbed after heavy rain as seen here in October 2023.
