Haddington: Scene at the former NB Haddington terminus in December 2019 looking north west out along the platform. The original station building (later station masters house) nearest the camera has been extended and converted into flats. Beyond that, the old storage building with the red door now houses a music school and rehearsal studio. Both buildings were accessible from platform as well as street level (see [[71659]]).
Garnqueen: Looking north along the former course of the Monkland and Kirkintilloch Railway at Garnqueen in 1997. Rails were still embedded in the roadway, despite closure 15 years earlier, simply covered by tarmac. The posts of the level crossing gates also remained. Garnqueen station was open between 1849 and 1851. This was also probably the site of a stopping place open in 1828.
North Queensferry: A Fife local bound for Edinburgh calls at North Queensferry on 19 May 2021. It is a considerable climb from near sea level at Inverkeithing to the height of the Forth Bridge here; I've read of a train slipping backwards in the tunnel in steam days with the driver being unaware until he re-emerged from the same tunnel mouth!
Eglinton Street: View south from Kilbirnie Street, over the site of Eglinton Street station, on 7th June 2021.
Farington Curve Junction: The gradient on Farington Curve is around 1:90 but it somehow looks steeper and the sharp curve means it could be tricky for drivers in charge of substantial loads. Colas 70809 lifts the Preston Dock to Lindsey (empty) bitumen tanks away from the junction on to the East Lancashire line on 10th June 2021.
Bridge No 95: The trackbed of the Waverley route at Galashiels on a fine morning in April 2010, looking north through the bridge carrying Plumtreehall Brae (still used by road traffic at that time) over what was then a surfaced walkway through the town. Just beyond is Bridge No 95 spanning the Gala Water, with the site of Kilnknowe Junction on the far side.
Bishop's Lydeard: GWR/BR 9351 at Bishop's Lydeard, West Somerset Rly, waiting to take the first train of the day out to Watchet and then return later. This engine started life as a GWR 'Large Prairie' 2-6-2T 5193 but about 15 years ago was rebuilt as a 2-6-0 tender engine, as Swindon surely would have redesigned it. 31 May 2021.
Walkden: Walkden station canopy restored.
Thornton Yard: Network Rail has taken delivery of sixteen thousand sleepers that will form part of the new Levenmouth Rail link. The sleepers have been delivered to and are being stored in Thornton Yard, to the west of the branch line, ahead of major work to deliver the project from early 2022.
Swansea: The entrance to Swansea station after refurbishment.
West Finchley: LU 1995 stock with a Northern Line service from High Barnet to Kennington via Charing Cross arriving at West Finchley on 24th April 2021. The line is now part of the London Underground but was opened by the GNR on 1st April 1872, although this station was an afterthought, opening on 1st March 1933 under the LNER. It retains its halt-like buildings and was first served by tube trains in 1940. The station serves the Nether Street area of Finchley and, when planned, locals were asked to suggest a name for the station and somebody came up with West Finchley. Personally, I don't see why it couldn't have been called Nether Street which is the main thoroughfare of this 1930s suburban development.
Leyland: DRS 88001 approaches Leyland on the Down Fast line with the 4S44 Daventry to Mossend intermodal on 24 April 2021. The equipment on the abandoned section of platform is dismantled temporary lighting being used in connection with p-way work on the Down Fast over recent weekends. See image [75871].
Port Glasgow: Platform view looking west at Port Glasgow on Saturday 20 July 1963. The train arriving is a Gourock - Glasgow Central service, hauled by one of Ladyburn sheds BR Standard class 4 2-6-0s no 76070.
Stranraer Shed: The array of buildings constituting the former Stranraer Shed as seen in 1989 from the south during an escorted visit to the former Stranraer Town station. Nearest is the running shed - a two road building of the joint line and one road building of the Girvan line. Beyond is the two road joint erecting shed. Beyond this - out of sight, also ruined but still standing - was the two road Caledonian shed. The brick structure on the right is the base of a water tank. In the foreground are the goods yard lines with the former passenger lines behind the camera.
Kingsknowe: The driver of a Saturday morning Edinburgh - Glasgow Central train activates the LC barriers at Kingsknowe on 18 July 2009. Unit 158786 is in transitional livery, having arrived in Scotland sporting South West Trains markings in early 2007 (see image [[54822]]) with its bright splash of colour seen across the region for many months thereafter The appearance here of a 158 was unusual in itself, given the predominance of class 156 units on these services at the time. The change was due to the latter having been redeployed over that particular weekend to handle Golflink shuttles between Glasgow Central and Girvan in connection with the 138th Open at Turnberry (see image [[24635]]).
