This was a temporary water powered pneumatic power station. A Garrick & Ritchie water turbine was connected to a compressor. Pneumatic power was used for construction tools for the line - hammers, rock drills etc.
Thomas McAlpine was inspired by a visit to a dentist in Helensburgh.
