This pit was owned by the Glengarnock Iron and Steel Co. It was rail served, a connection for the private network of lines was about half a mile east of Saltcoats on the Ardrossan Railway. The pit was on the north side of the line.
There was a flooding disaster here in 1895 in which nine men were killed. There is a memorial by the Auchenharvie Golf Club club house.
