Location type

Junction

Name and dates

Auldhouseburn Colliery Signal Box

Opened on the Muirkirk Branch (Caledonian Railway).

Description

This signal box was located on the single track line between Muirkirk [2nd] and Auldhouseburn Junction.

The box opened before 1895. It was on the south/east side of the line. It controlled access to the exchange yard with the Baird's Railway (Muirkirk) which connected the Muirkirk Iron Works to coal pits to its east. Access to the exchange yard was from the north/east. A branch ran south to a coal pit to the south. After closure this was used as a reversing spur to reach Auldhouseburn Coal Pit which was alongside the main railway, north/east of the box.

The box closed in 1906 when it was replaced with a ground frame.

To the north/west was the route of the Muirkirk Canal, the predecessor of all the railways, connecting the iron works to coal pits to the east.

The main line closed in 1964. The formation of the lines and canal still exist.
