This basin, which does not in fact have a higher water level than the main Bowling Canal Basin, was built on a diversion of the Forth and Clyde Canal which was needed when the Lanarkshire and Dumbartonshire Railway was opened in 1896. The original course of the canal was to the south. This basin provided a location for westbound vessels to await the opening of the Bowling Swing Bridge. The original lock 38, which had been at the east end of the main basin, was replaced with a new lock at the east end of the new secondary basin.
