This was the most important goods station in Glasgow having grown from a single goods shed (on the south side and alongside the Buchanan Street passenger station) to an enormous facility far larger than the passenger station. Latterly this was a huge stone built goods shed and warehousing.
The goods yard was rebuilt in the 1860s - replacing an array of small sheds - with a fan of lines on the east side which extended south to a block north of Parliamentary Road where a large goods building was erected along with a 5 storey granary. Much of the site had been Cowcaddens East Quarry.
The site of the original shed was also rebuilt with more lines and a large shed.
The new central goods shed had a three floor office block at its south end, a warehousing range of two floors along the whole goods shed building, granary warehousing of five floors down the length of the east side and the goods shed itself which was a single story but considerable in size. The north end of this had a large canopied island platform reaching north to near the passenger station. Three groups of sidings led into the shed.
The goods yard was further extended in 1892/93.
Authorisation, between 1900 and 1902, gave permission to open out the area around Dobbies Loan, build further goods facilities, extend the bridge which carried Dobbies Loan over the widened railway and purchase the site of the Glasgow Poor House.
The new goods shed opened in 1909.
Ultimately there was a goods shed on the south side of the passenger station (the west store), a further shed north of Parliamentary Road (the central store) with the granary on its east side, loading banks and a potato shed and a secondary set of sidings with a loading bank, goods shed (the east store) and warehouse on the west side of Dobbies Loan, approached under a long girder bridge.
The goods yard closed in 1962 and track removed while Buchanan Street passenger station remained until 1966.
The entire area has been landscaped since closure. Cowcaddens Road runs through the site of the central goods shed and granary. On the north side of Cowcaddens Road (from 1971) much of the site is now the Glasgow Caledonian University. Having sat largely vacant for a few years the northern part of the Buchanan Street Bus Station was built on the site of the southern half of that shed and its main front entrance.
