Name and dates

Carron Company Basin

Opened on the Carron Company.

Description

This canal basin, now infilled, was on the west/north bank of the Forth and Clyde Canal. It was connected to the Carron Iron Works with a tramway and was used for the delivery of coal to the works from the canal system, and export of iron products.

The railway was upgraded and became a tramway, connecting to the Stirlingshire Midland Junction Railway at Swing Bridge Junction to the west. This led to the run down and closure of the basin.

The basin is now infilled and is landscaped. It was located to the north of the present day lock 8. Lock 8 is not an original lock, the original lock 8 was a little to the east.
