This pass, at an altitude of 2526 ft, is on the former Military Road built by General Wade's troops in 1731 between Ruthven Barracks and Fort Augustus.
The road fell out of use as a maintained public way between 1830 (surface repairs) and 1850 (bridge repairs).
Today it is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
