Duncraig Castle, a baronial mansion, was built for Alexander Matheson in 1866 on his Lochalsh Estate. When new this was a remote and difficult to approach location.
The mansion enjoys a superb overview of Loch Carron and the Cullin and Applecross mountains.
In 1945 it was left to the council and was converted into a college. An ugly modern extension was added in 1969. The college closed in 1989.
In 2003 it became a private house again, owned by the Dobson family, who began the restoration. It changed hands again in 2009 and restoration continues.
The extension has been removed.
The house is served by Duncraig station. This was a private station from opening in 1897 until 1949 when it became public. It remains open.
