Kinlochailort Camp (1897-1901)

Description

The Kinlochailort camp was the largest of the temporary construction camps built to accommodate navvies. . Of the 3,500 men employed on the line's construction, some 1,500 navvies lived here (some suggest as many as 2,000), with around 35 wooden huts (intended to sleep around 40 men each). There was a bakery at this camp, supplying the men with fresh bread every day, and a Cooper and Co store.

The camp was a short distance from the Camas Driseach Depot landing site where flat bottomed puffers could be beached as the tide went out and unloaded.

Lochailort station is nearby, to the east.

Nothing remains of the camp today.
