Kinlocheil Depot (1897-1901)

Description

This supply depot was used by Robert McAlpine and Sons during the construction of the Mallaig Extension (West Highland Railway).

The depot was west of Locheilside, close to milepost 12.5. It was one of the main depots for the construction of the line. There was a new pier built on the north shore of Loch Eil. In addition puffers could be beached as the tide went out. Here plant and materials could be landed. There were workshops (an engineering shop, smithy and saw mill), cement store, coal depot and general stores. It was a bridgehead for the works further west going through Glenfinnan as the nearest seawater going west was at Kinlochailort (around 27 miles from Banavie).

Nothing remains on site today, it is a grassy field
