Leith Mills, or Leith Saw Mills, were on the south bank of the Water of Leith and west of Junction Bridge.
It was here that Timothy Burstall and John Reed Hill built the locomotive 'Perseverance' in 1829 which was exhibited at the Rainhill Trials. The locomotive was four wheeled with a mid mounted vertical boiler. The locomotive was taken by sea to Liverpool for the trial (the reverse to the process on the other side of the Junction Bridge where locomotives were shipped to Leith from Newcastle for assembly at Leith Engine Works). The locomotive was damaged after arrival at Liverpool but was able to enter the competition on its 6th day. It achieved 6mph, but unfortunately an average of 10mph was required.
The site of themills is now housing.
