Bridge

Name and dates

Little Water of Fleet Viaduct (1861-1965)

Opened on the Portpatrick Railway.

Description

This was a grey granite nine arch single track viaduct between the Big Water of Fleet Viaduct and the former Loch Skerrow station. The overall length of the viaduct was 359 ft and 51 ft over the Little Water of Fleet. Also known as the 'Wee Fleet Viaduct'.

Like the Big Water of Fleet Viaduct the bridge was strengthened in 1905 and again in 1939 (due to wartime traffic). The piers were braced with rails.

The line closed in 1965.

The viaduct was demolished by the Royal Engineers in 1987 (the water tank at Loch Skerrow was also felled).

The engineers were Blyth and Blyth.

A nearby forestry track provides an alternative route for walkers.
