Description

This distillery was laid out for John Haig to the south east of the Edinburgh Old Town. It was, from 1822, served by the Union Canal which was to its east with its Lochrin Basin.

The distillery had mixed fortunes and closed for a final time in 1860.

From 1860 William Bain operated the Lochrin Iron Works from the former distillery. His foundry made fences and gates.

William Bain & Co was to relocate to the centre of the iron industry at Coatbridge in 1888 opening the Lochrin Iron Works [2nd] (and taking the name Lochrin to Coatbridge).

The original Lochrin Basin has been filled in, but the present day terminus of the cut back canal is known by the same name.
