Station
Newry Main Line (1856-1866)
Bessbrook and Newry Main Line (1866-1880)
Bessbrook (1880-1942)
Newry (1984-)
Opened on the Dublin and Belfast Junction Railway.
This is a two platform station opened in 1984 on the site of an older station. The station has canopied platforms and a car park on its east side.
The original station opened in 1856 and was named Newry Main Line to distinguish it from the 1849 Newry Kilmorey Street on the Newry, Warrenpoint and Rostrevor Railway. When opened the main line station was somewhat distant from Newry itself, but closer than Newry Armagh Road which it replaced.
In 1880 with the opening from Newry Bridge Street to Newry Edward Street the station was renamed Bessbrook, which was more geographically accurate (Bessbrook being to the west and slightly closer than Newry).
The goods yard was located on the west side, approached from the north.
The station closed in 1942. It re-opened in 1984 along with a number of local stations.
