This memorial is for Peter Fowler and Gordon Turnball who were killed by a tunnel collapse during works to increase clearance in the Penmanshiel Tunnel on the 17th of March 1979.

whose short life was surrounded by love
and whose untimely death aged 21

has caused much grief to his family,
to his wife Jane and to young Peter.

born at Gordon on 1st August, 1945.
Died in the tunnel collapse here
on 17th March 1979.
Always gentle, always kind.
These are the memories he left behind.
