Perceton Junction

Location type

Junction

Name and dates

Perceton Junction (1848-1939)

Opened on the Busbie Branch (Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway).

Description

This 1848 junction was just east of Capringstone Bridge and was for a branch which ran north to Capringstone Coal Pit No 7 and Perceton Fireclay Works. The branch made a trailing connection to the eastbound line. Just to the west was a second siding, for Capringstone Coal Pit No 8, also on the north side and approached from the east.

A signal box opened to the south of the junction in 1879.

The box burned down in 1937 and was replaced with a ground frame until the Second World War.

The main line closed to passengers in 1964 and completely in 1965. It is now a footpath. The footpath takes a meandering route west of the junction site to the Capringstone Bridge and is possibly even less direct to the east before regaining the trackbed.
