Caledonian Sleeper National Express takes over the franchise for ScotRail and the Caledonian Sleepers. Awarded for seven years. This was the last of the franchises to be let and had the largest number of route miles, trains and stations served. |

| 21/10/2001 | ScotRail Strategic Rail Authority states that the next ScotRail franchise will run for fifteen years from April 2004 (later reduced to seven). |
| /11/2001 | Hunslet Barclay Wins contract to overhaul ScotRail's Class 320s (work to be between 2002 and 2004). |
