This was the Singer Manufacturing Co's second site in Glasgow, replacing a small site of 1867 where sewing machines were assembled from imported parts in John Street. By 1871 it was the largest factory in the world. Glasgow was chosen due to the established iron industry and machine shops. It was replaced in 1883/4 by the larger new factory built at Kilbowie, the Singer Works.
This works was subsequently used as a printing works. Unlike its replacement the site was not rail served, the nearest station was Bridgeton Cross [NB] (it closed before the neighbouring Bridgeton Cross [CR] opened).
The site has been lost under the new McKeith Street and housing developments.
