These corn and paper mills (later oats - Scott's Porridge Oats) were located on the south bank of the Water of Leith. The mills were served by a siding of the Balerno Branch (Caledonian Railway) which crossed the river from the north east to reach the mill. The siding began just south west of Colinton station.
