Unmanned EWS class 90 locomotive runs out of Edinburgh Waverley station for 2 miles

Date: 20/11/2002

An unmanned EWS electric class 90 locomotive ran out of Edinburgh Waverley station eastwards for 2 miles before being diverted into a (presumably not electified) siding at Craigentinny Depot.

From EWS's press release: "tests carried out on the locomotive by EWS, in the presence of HMRI, have identified that a technical fault occurred on the hydraulic pipe work, which operates the parking brake on the locomotive."

EWS will be checking its other class 90s and has recommended that other companies do the same. A permanent way maintenance crew had to clear the track as it approached (trains normally sound their horn as they approach track maintenance crews, often at lowered speeds).
