A circular tramway from Edinburgh to Leith and Newhaven proposed by Transport Initiatives Edinburgh Ltd (City of Edinburgh Council) is to be opened in 2009 following allocation of funding by the Scottish Executive to the project. Further branches are proposed; West Edinburgh Link (City to Gyle, Edinburgh Park and Edinburgh Airport), South Easy (City to new Edinburgh Royal Infirmary site).

Edinburgh City Council closed the extensive Edinburgh Corporation tramways between 1952 and 1956.
