'Thomas the tank' railway Talyllyn's engineers' award [BBC News]

The railway which inspired the author of the Thomas the Tank Engine books has been honoured. Talyllyn, which was built in 1866 to carry slate and passengers in mid Wales, became the world's first volunteer-run heritage railway in 1951. The cartoon engine's creator, the Reverend W Awdry, joined the volunteers in 1952.

Bryn Eglwys was the village containing the slate mines that were the raison d'etre of the Talyllyn Railway. Around the village were several small inclines, each with its own winding house.

Talyllyn locomotive No. 3 Sir Haydn takes water at Dolgoch station. This locomotive, and sister engine No.4, had originally worked on the Corris Railway but were bought by the Talyllyn to supplement the two original locos on the line.
