Railway bosses last night said funding had been approved for a new station building at Wakefield Westgate. The £6.6m project will see facilities including a travel centre, shops, First Class lounge, customer reception and information screens provided. The new station will be built adjacent to a multi-storey car park and provide better access for vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles directly off the inner ring road and local bus routes. The large high-rise multi-user car park that has replaced the low-level car park that previously occupied the former goods yard at Wakefield Westgate station. The siting of the new car park in the throat of the old yard has precluded any possibility of running tracks behind the S&T building to provide extra platform capacity.

A stopping service for Leeds, comprising Pacer 144002, calls at Platform 2 at Wakefield Westgate. The surviving through road is bi-directional and there is a turnback siding just beyond this platform so this busy station has a flexible track layout. View towards Leeds.
