National Railway Museum celebrates free admission success [The Press]

A KNIGHT in shining armour rode into the National Railway Museum to help celebrate ten years of success since the introduction of free admission. Since December 2001, visitor numbers have doubled at the York attraction to make it one of the most popular museums in the country outside London.

Almost there. Deltic 55002 'The Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry' nearing the end of a long restoration and refurbishment programme in the NRM workshops on 29 June 2011. A month earlier the locomotive had moved through the yard under its own power for the first time in 14 years.

Beautifully turned out ex-Furness Railway 0-4-0 No 20 on display as part of Railfest at the NRM, York, in 2004. Built by Sharp Stewart & Co in Manchester in 1863, No 20 is the oldest working standard gauge steam locomotive in Britain. [See image 37662]
