The government is set to outline how it plans to save billions of pounds from spending on the railways. It follows a review last year by former civil servant Sir Roy McNulty which recommended that running costs should be cut by a third to bring them in line with other European networks. Sir Roy criticised the level of rail workers' wages and said some ticket offices may have to be closed. Transport unions have expressed fears up to 12,000 jobs could be lost.
