Within five years, the volunteers who run the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway hope to have established a link to Skipton which will open up the opportunity for people living in Leeds and Bradford to travel by rail to the tourist hotspot

An ambitious plan to reconnect an historic steam railway to the national network is about to take a major step forward.

The train, which originated from Birmingham New Street, had been hauled here from Carnforth by 75019 + 75027 and would shortly be taken forward by 45073 + 45156 on the next stage of the tour as far as Rose Grove. The Mill, which at one time employed 2000 people, finally ceased production in the 1980s and was later converted to residential apartments.

A century on... remains of the original 1888 Midland Railway station at Bolton Abbey in a derelict state on 22 March 1988, some 23 years after closure to passenger traffic. The old station has since been demolished, and a replica building built and opened by the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway.
