All aboard! Restored railway set to reopen [Total Essex]

THE Epping Ongar Railway will open to passengers for the first time in May after four years of restoration. The first passenger service will run from Ongar into Epping Forest on May 25. The news heralds an exciting period for all concerned with the heritage railway.

The former Great Eastern Railway terminus at Ongar on 23 July 1993 with a London Underground Central Line train at the platform. The station officially closed on 30 September the following year but is now the headquarters of a preservation group. The objectives of the group, 'The Epping Ongar Railway Ltd' include the reinstatement of scheduled passenger services between the two locations.
