PLANS for the latest stage of a huge revamp of one of York’s major tourist attractions have been drawn up. A £2.8 million package of improvements is being carried out at the National Railway Museum (NRM) on Leeman Road, aimed at drawing in more visitors and making it easier for them to view its exhibits

The signalbox track circuit diagram from Aberdeen South SB (marked as LMSR 1947) photographed at the NRM York on 13 March 2012 strapped to a series of crowd control barriers. This is just one of thousands of exhibits in the area known as 'The Warehouse'. This area is an absolute Aladdin's Cave of many real railway gems which may not have the same appeal to the general public as the larger exhibits in the adjacent Great Hall.

The recent rebuild of 6229 Duchess of Hamilton with new streamlined casing has been well documented but is almost breathtaking when first seen at the NRM. The LMS Pacific is sited alongside its LNER A4 rival and is displayed with an LMS coach, also in red with gold stripes. The UK preservation movement is achieving things that would have been unthinkable a few years ago.
