Date: 20/08/2012

An investigation has been launched into a fire which destroyed a large hay shed at a farm next to a village school in south west Scotland. Fire crews spent the night tackling the blaze which was discovered near Moniaive Primary School at about 17:00 on Sunday. Police said they keen to trace a group of youths seen in the area. No-one was injured, but about 50 tonnes of hay and a number of farm vehicles were destroyed. The total damage was estimated to be worth more than £32,000. Residents said the blaze had effectively destroyed a slice of local history. The building was once used as a goods shed for the former Cairn Valley Railway. [From Andrew Wilson]
