Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin has set aside legal threats and asked Virgin Rail Group to continue to run West Coast train services on a temporary basis from December. Virgin had been the favourite to run the London to Scotland services on a short-term contract, after the government was forced to pull the long-term franchise award after it discovered serious flaws in the handling of the bids.
