£40m rail bid submitted for Colne and Skipton line [Lancashire Telegraph]

CAMPAIGNERS fighting for the reinstatement of the railway between Colne and Skipton have lodged a bid for £40million to fund the project. Members of SELRAP (Skipton-East Lancashire Railway Action Partnership) want cash from the Government’s Regional Growth Fund to pay for the upgrade of the line. [From Mark Bartlett]

The previous occasion on which I visited this station was during its last week of service in January 1970. Thornton-in-Craven closed, along with the Colne to Skipton line, w.e.f. 2nd February 1970 and there have been campaigns ever since to reopen this missing link between Lancashire and Yorkshire (which should never have closed). Buffer stops stand at the current terminus of the line at Colne on 9 November 2007. A double track once continued northeast from here to Skipton, the junction for Carlisle, Leeds and Bradford. A local rail action group is currently campaigning for the reopening of this route.
