A neglected looking Fairburn 2-6-4T no 42680 prepares to take a train out of Windermere station in 1964. The locomotive was finally withdrawn from Carnforth shed in March the following year and made its last journey to Drapers of Hull shortly thereafter.

The old station at Windermere has been converted into a supermarket with the original 1847 building, including this covered entrance, happily surviving the metamorphosis. The line has been cut back only a very short distance and the bus is just leaving the second station on a service for Lancaster.

A TransPennine Express service recently arrived at Windermere from Oxenholme on 24 August. Amazing that this service has survived but Penrith to Keswick did not.
