Rail on track for 'new golden age' [Scotsman]

A rail chief has invoked the Hollywood blockbuster Field Of Dreams in setting out his vision for how the Scottish network will dramatically expand over the next 50 years.
Alex Sharkey, one of Network Rail's most senior officials in Scotland, believes the demand is there to drive significant further growth in train travel if only the lines can be opened.

On 24 November a westbound 6-car 334 makes a stop on a training run passing 158729 at Platform 1 waiting to return to Edinburgh. The new ScotRail depot stands in the background. In the nicest possible way Bathgate will hope never to see a 158 again come 12 December.

Running past the Stirling County RFC grounds, a First ScotRail 158 is about to cross the Forth on the NB viaduct on 9 April 2008. The Caledonian viaduct carrying the Stirling - Perth line stands alongside. The 158 is on a return familiarisation working along the recently reopened S&DR route from Alloa.
