New Pont Briwet rail bridge over Dwyryd estuary to open [BBC News]

A new Pont Briwet bridge that will carry the Cambrian Coast railway line over the Dwyryd estuary is opening on Monday after being hit by delays. It has replaced the 154-year-old bridge in Penrhyndeudraeth, Gwynedd, which was shut over safety concerns. [From Richard Buckby]

The soon-to-be-demolished original Pont Briwet on 6th July with its replacement taking shape alongside. Work on the new bridge caused the 1860s wooden trestle bridge to become unstable in December 2013, following which the line was closed from Harlech to Pwllheli. It is expected to reopen by September 2014. [See image 46693]

Unlit Llandecwyn viewed looking north towards the combined Pont Briwet road and rail timber viaduct over the Traeth Bach. Llandecwyn station is some distance from the locality giving it its name with Cilfor being the nearest village. Penryndeudraeth Station is out of shot beyond the viaduct.
