The 125 mph electric multiple unit (EMU), which received an understated unveiling at the Railtex exhibition in Birmingham on May 12, is an intercity variation of Siemens’ Desiro platform targeted at the UK market. This summer, Siemens will deliver the first of 115 12-car Desiro City trains to Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR). The new ‘high capacity’ commuter trainsets will operate between Bedford and Brighton from 2016. The Verve features a more aerodynamic exterior design than the Class 700 and an interior more suited to intercity travel. [From Richard Buckby]
